DRI CapabilitiesThe University of Denver Research Institute operates two major Homeland Defense Institutes – The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center-Rocky Mountain (NLECTC) and the Rocky Mountain Center for Homeland Defense & Preparedness (RMCHD&P). NLECTC-RM focuses on projects in the areas of improvised explosive devices, geographic information systems (GIS) technology and communication operability. The RMCHD&P mission is to be the region’s Center of Excellence for protection against, and response to, a range of terrorist incidents and large-scale disruptive events. Denver Research Institute also operates an explosives test range at a remote site east of Denver. Currently, the range facility offers DRI the ability to perform tests utilizing up to 5lbs of explosives (in net explosive weight - NEW) in the open-air. We are very closely associated with the academic departments of the University of Denver. As such we have access to the full talent of the Departments of Engineering and Computer Science, Departments of the Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Biology) and Mathematics as well as faculty and staff in the law, business and social sciences fields. We have sophisticated expertise in modeling of radiation transport and activation and radiation shielding and in the area of acoustic systems development. We designed and built the satellite protection device that protected the vehicle from splash back of material when it sent a projectile probe into comet 9P/Tempel 1 last year. Our research is primarily applied.
